Wolverhampton Wanderers Legend Mike Bailey Passes Away at 84
Wolverhampton Wanderers and the wider English football community are in mourning following the death of legendary former club captain Mike Bailey, who passed away at the age of 84. The celebrated midfielder had been living with dementia following his diagnosis in 2017.
Wolves officially confirmed the news of his passing via a statement on social media, paying homage to one of Molineux’s most revered figures.
"Our legendary former captain, Mike Bailey, has sadly passed away aged 84. A true leader at Molineux for over a decade and a pivotal part of some of the club's most successful days. Our thoughts are with Mike's loved ones," the club stated.
A Decade of Dominance at Molineux
Bailey began his senior professional career with Charlton Athletic before earning a high-profile move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1966. Over the next 11 years, he established himself as the beating heart of the Wolves squad.
Between 1966 and 1977, Bailey made 436 appearances for the Midlands club, scoring 25 goals. Shortly after arriving, he orchestrated the team's promotion back to the top flight in 1967, earning himself the prestigious Midlands Player of the Year award.
Under his dynamic leadership, Wolves enjoyed one of the most memorable eras in their history. Bailey led the side to the inaugural UEFA Cup final in 1972—where they narrowly missed out on European glory in a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Tottenham Hotspur—and famously captained Wolves to a 2-1 League Cup victory over Manchester City at Wembley in 1974. His consistent performances also earned him two senior international caps for England.
Tributes Flow for a True Leader
Tributes have poured in from former teammates and former clubs following the announcement of his death.
John Richards, former Wolves goalscorer and Chairman of the Wolves Former Players' Association, expressed profound sadness over the loss of his former skipper, which follows closely on the heels of the passing of legendary Wolves goalkeeper Phil "Lofty" Parkes.
"Coming so soon after the passing of Lofty, who was one of Mike's close pals within our team, this is another devastating loss," Richards said. "I can't fully describe how much respect I have for Mike as a player and as a person. His influence on us as players, both with his leadership and his performances, made him such a massive part of the dressing room. He was a great captain—not only in how he led the team, but also in the individual guidance he gave to each of us."
Charlton Athletic also released a statement honoring their former player and promotion-winning manager:
"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player and promotion-winning Manager Mike Bailey at the age of 84."
Bailey leaves behind a legacy as one of the most formidable, respected, and successful captains in Wolverhampton Wanderers' history.
