WELLINGTON / NEW DELHI — In a major leadership transition within the aviation sector, Air New Zealand has appointed outgoing Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson to its board of directors as a non-executive director.
The Wellington-based flag carrier confirmed the strategic appointment in a regulatory filing, noting that Wilson—a native of New Zealand—will assume his seat subject to a formal vote of approval at the airline's Annual Shareholders' Meeting (ASM) scheduled for September 24. Former Air New Zealand Chief Financial Officer Robert McDonald has also been appointed to the board under the same terms.
The board changes come as Air New Zealand prepares for the upcoming retirement of director Larry De Shon next month. The board currently consists of seven members under the leadership of Chair Dame Therese Walsh.
Wilson's move to the advisory space follows his decision to step back from full-time executive responsibilities after steering Air India through a multi-year turnaround and consolidation effort following its privatization under the Tata Group. Air India announced on April 7 that Wilson would formally demit office in September.
A veteran airline executive with more than three decades of experience in the international aviation industry, Wilson previously built his career with Singapore Airlines and served as the founding CEO of low-cost carrier Scoot. His industry leadership credentials also include tenures on the Board of Governors of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Board Executive Committee of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), and the Star Alliance Executive Committee.
In recent interactions, Wilson signaled his intention to move away from day-to-day operational management in favor of governance, board advisory roles, and academic mentoring.
Meanwhile, Air India announced earlier this month that former Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Tewolde Gebremariam will take over as the Indian carrier's new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
