GUWAHATI — The flood situation across Assam showed subtle signs of improvement on Sunday, though the death toll rose to 68 following two fresh drownings reported over the past 24 hours. Concurrently, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state unit aims to raise ₹12 crore from its workers to deliver targeted relief aid to displaced families.

According to the latest bulletin released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the two recent fatalities occurred in Charaideo district, which remains the worst-affected area in the state.

Over 5.2 Lakh People Still Affected Across 5 Districts

Though overall water levels began to recede due to a lull in overnight rainfall, more than 5,24,700 people across five Upper Assam districts continue to grapple with severe inundation.

  • Charaideo remains the hardest-hit zone, with nearly 1.9 lakh residents affected.

  • Sivasagar follows closely, reporting over 1.5 lakh impacted citizens.

  • Jorhat continues to battle flooding with around 1.4 lakh affected residents.

  • Golaghat and Nagaon districts account for the remainder of the affected population.

While total affected numbers saw a decline from Saturday’s figure of 6.55 lakh across six districts, large swathes of land remain submerged. Across the state, 763 villages are under water, and more than 48,740 hectares of standing crops have suffered heavy damage. Major infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and river embankments, has also been compromised.

As of Sunday evening, the Dhansiri river at Numaligarh continues to flow above the critical danger mark. Furthermore, the deluge has disrupted the lives of over 88,200 domestic animals and poultry.

Relief Operations and ₹12-Crore Aid Mobilization

Disaster response teams—comprising the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police—have rescued hundreds of stranded residents. ASDMA reported that 354 relief camps and distribution centers are actively operating in four districts, housing 37,724 displaced individuals.

Briefing reporters in Guwahati, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma outlined a political relief initiative aimed at assisting vulnerable groups in the flood-ravaged zones.

"The Assam BJP aims to collect ₹12 crore from party workers to help the flood-affected people in the state. We will provide new clothes to two lakh women and two lakh children," Sarma stated, calling on party karyakartas to contribute generously.

Sarma advised that contributions under ₹2,000 can be handed directly to local MLAs, while larger donations should be deposited into the party's official bank account.

Power Restoration and Federal Support

Efforts are also underway to restore basic services in areas where floodwaters have retreated. In a update shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister confirmed that Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) teams are conducting safety audits before restoring electricity in phases across Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Dhubri, and Bongaigaon.

The Central government is maintaining close watch over the situation, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi assuring the Chief Minister of all possible assistance from New Delhi to assist in emergency response and post-flood rehabilitation.
