NAGAON — Ending weeks of debate and public anticipation, the office of the Co-District Commissioner for the newly declared Barhampur co-district will officially be established at Kathiatoli in Nagaon district.
The announcement was made by local MLA Jitu Goswami, bringing clarity to residents and public representatives who had been eagerly following discussions surrounding the selection of the administrative headquarters.
The decision comes after extensive consultations among government officials, local stakeholders, and public representatives to ensure the new administrative hub is centrally located and accessible to the maximum number of citizens across the constituency. Kathiatoli was ultimately chosen due to its favorable connectivity, existing infrastructure, and strategic position along key transit routes in the region.
Addressing reporters, the legislator highlighted that setting up the Co-District Commissioner’s office in Kathiatoli marks a crucial milestone in decentralized governance for Barhampur. "This step fulfills a long-standing demand of the local public. By bringing top administrative authorities closer to the grassroots, citizens will no longer have to travel long distances for critical civil and revenue services," the MLA stated.
The government of Assam recently notified eight additional co-districts—including Barhampur in Nagaon district—as fully functional to streamline administrative efficiency and decentralize public service delivery.
Preparations for acquiring suitable land and constructing the administrative complex in Kathiatoli are set to begin shortly, with temporary arrangements expected to accommodate the office operations in the interim to ensure immediate administrative support for the public.
