GUWAHATI: An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck Bhutan on Saturday afternoon, triggering light tremors across several parts of Northeast India, including Assam’s major city Guwahati.

According to data released by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the seismic event occurred at approximately 4:01 PM IST. The epicenter of the earthquake was recorded at a very shallow depth of 5 kilometers, situated roughly 3 kilometers from Gyelpozhing in Bhutan. Its coordinates were tracked at a latitude of 27.163°N and a longitude of 91.240°E.

Because of the shallow depth of the hypocenter, the sudden shaking was distinctly experienced by residents in western Assam, Guwahati, and surrounding pockets of the region. Many people rushed out of their homes and offices into open areas as a precautionary measure following the brief wave of panic.

Fortunately, local authorities and disaster management cells confirmed that there have been no immediate reports of structural damage, injuries, or loss of life.

The eastern Himalayan belt, where both Bhutan and Northeast India are geographically positioned, sits within a highly sensitive and seismically active zone, prone to frequent low-to-moderate intensity tremors. State administrations and disaster response units remain on alert, continuously monitoring the situation for any potential aftershocks. Officials have urged citizens to stay calm and rely only on verified updates from authorized government channels.
