DERBY, England — The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has launched a formal investigation after video footage surfaced online showing fast bowler Brydon Carse in police handcuffs outside a nightclub in Derby.
The incident took place following Durham's dominant three-day County Championship victory over Derbyshire, where Carse was celebrating with his teammates. In video footage circulating across social media platforms, the 28-year-old pacer is seen restrained by police officers outside the venue. Durham teammates Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts were also briefly spotted in the surrounding crowd.
The governing body confirmed the ongoing inquiry in an official statement: "We are aware of an incident, which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating. We will provide a further update when possible."
Reports indicate that Carse was detained briefly by local police during the late-night commotion but was subsequently released without any charges filed against him.
Recent Form and Team Selection
Carse had been released from England’s Test squad to gain valuable red-ball overs for Durham in Division Two of the County Championship. During the match against Derbyshire, the right-arm fast bowler picked up figures of 2 for 82 and scored 26 runs, helping Durham wrap up a swift victory inside three days.
The South African-born quick was England's standout bowler during their previous Ashes campaign but has dealt with an injury-plagued spell over the past year. Wrist and elbow injuries forced him out of the winter series against New Zealand before he earned a recall to the white-ball setup for the series against India.
Pattern of Off-Field Distractions
The development comes as another unwelcome off-field distraction for English cricket, which has seen a series of high-profile night-time incidents involving international players in recent months.
Last November, batter Harry Brook was involved in a late-night altercation with security personnel in Wellington during England's tour of New Zealand. Earlier this summer, captain Ben Stokes and pacer Gus Atkinson faced disciplinary action and missed a Test match after breaching team curfew following a victory, an episode that ultimately preceded Stokes' unexpected retirement from international cricket.
The ECB has not yet indicated whether Carse will face internal disciplinary measures as their review into the Derby incident continues.
