AL KHASAB, Oman — An unidentified projectile struck a commercial cargo vessel off the coast of Oman early Tuesday, triggering an emergency alert in one of the world's most critical maritime corridors, maritime security monitors confirmed.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the incident occurred approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Al Khasab, an Omani town situated near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
According to an official security advisory issued by the UKMTO, the crew on board the affected vessel broadcasted an urgent distress call over VHF Channel 16 following the impact.
"UKMTO has received a report of an incident 20NM northeast of Al Khasab, Oman. A cargo vessel has broadcast on VHF 16 that they have been hit by an unknown projectile. Authorities are investigating," the agency stated in an advisory posted to social media platform X.
Details regarding the full extent of the damage, the vessel's identity, and whether any casualties were sustained among the crew have not yet been disclosed as regional and international authorities launch a formal investigation into the attack.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei clarified that recent technical arrangements made between Iran and Oman regarding vessel traffic in the Strait of Hormuz were aimed strictly at facilitating safe maritime transit and did not constitute a broader political breakthrough.
