NEW DELHI — In a major development in the investigation into the death of a 31-year-old postgraduate student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, the Delhi Police have formally registered a case of abetment to suicide against unidentified persons.
The deceased, a student pursuing an M.Sc. in Physics, allegedly died by suicide on August 22 after falling from the sixth floor of a building situated within the high-security campus in South Delhi.
According to senior police officials, a preliminary inquiry established that the student entered the IIT Delhi campus through the main gate around 8:00 AM on the day of the incident. He proceeded directly to the Lecture Hall Complex, took the elevator to the sixth floor, and allegedly jumped from the front balcony of the building.
The Kishangarh police station received a PCR call regarding the incident at approximately 8:30 AM. Emergency response personnel rushed the student to the campus hospital, where attending doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.
A specialized forensic science laboratory (FSL) team along with a crime inspection unit immediately cordoned off the area to collect physical and electronic evidence. While investigators found no suicide note at the scene, officers recovered and seized a mobile phone from the student's pocket, which is undergoing digital forensic analysis.
"We have registered an FIR under the relevant statutory provisions for abetment to suicide against unknown persons," a senior police officer confirmed. "We are probing all possible angles, including personal, financial, and academic pressures, to ascertain whether any external factors contributed to the tragic step."
As part of the widening probe, investigators are retrieving the student’s academic performance files, attendance records, and counseling history from the institute's administration to assess his mental state prior to the incident.
In an official statement released shortly after the incident, IIT Delhi expressed profound grief over the loss of life and assured complete cooperation with law enforcement authorities during the probe. The institute added that support services are being extended to the bereaved family.
