HYDERABAD — East Zone firmly seized command of the Duleep Trophy 2026 final after driving South Zone into a deep corner on Day 3, leaving the opposition trailing by a massive 466 runs at stumps. Responding to East Zone's colossal first-innings total of 708, South Zone reached 242/6 after 80 overs, still needing 267 runs to avoid a potential follow-on.

East Zone had earlier set the tone for the final with an authoritative batting performance, anchored by skipper Ishan Kishan’s double century of 270 and a solid 101 from wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra.

In reply, South Zone suffered early hiccups before Devdutt Padikkal brought brief stability to the innings. Padikkal stroked a fluent 62 off 104 deliveries, sharing crucial partnerships to guide South Zone to 115/2 at lunch. However, East Zone’s pace attack, spearheaded by India international Mohammed Shami and Mukesh Kumar, struck back decisively in the second session.

Mukesh broke through by removing Ricky Bhui and Padikkal, while Shami chipped in with two crucial strikes of his own—trapping Shaik Rasheed (27) leg-before and dismissing Smaran Ravichandran (23) caught behind. Their disciplined spell reduced South Zone to 174/5 by Tea.

South Zone skipper Tilak Varma showed remarkable grit amidst the collapse, anchoring one end with an unbeaten 56 off 133 balls. Varma stitched together a defensive stand alongside Shreyas Gopal (26) to frustrate the opposition bowlers late into the final session.

Just when South Zone looked set to see through the day without further damage, spinner Md Kounain Quraishi struck in the day’s final over, taking a sharp caught-and-bowled opportunity to send Gopal back to the pavilion.

At stumps on Day 3, Tilak Varma remains South Zone’s lone hope at the crease alongside tail-ender Chama Milind. With the pitch beginning to offer sharp turn and two full days remaining, South Zone faces an uphill battle to save the match, while East Zone edges closer to claiming their third Duleep Trophy title.
