WASHINGTON — Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman landed at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on Thursday, kicking off a high-stakes, six-day tour across the United States. Her itinerary includes leading the Indian delegation at the key G20 ministerial dialogues and engaging directly with top global corporate leaders, institutional investors, and tech pioneers to highlight India's macroeconomic strength.
Sitharaman arrived in Chicago following a successful three-day trip to Canada, where she co-chaired the inaugural India-Canada Economic and Financial Dialogue in Toronto. Upon landing in the US, she was received by Namgya C. Khampa, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Washington, and Somnath Ghosh, Consul General of India in Chicago. The US leg forms part of her nine-day joint visit to North America, scheduled to wrap up on September 2.
Targeting Innovation and US Capital in Chicago
The Finance Minister's agenda in Chicago begins with high-level corporate engagements. She is slated to chair an Investor Roundtable bringing together prominent executives, corporate presidents, and institutional funding leaders from across the private sector. Discussions will highlight India’s steady economic momentum, regulatory reforms, and expanding market opportunities designed to foster stronger cross-border trade and investment corridors.
Sitharaman will also tour the Polsky Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago. During her interactions with academic leaders and startup founders, she will exchange ideas on technology commercialization, venture incubation, and building deeper integration between the American innovation landscape and India's fast-growing startup ecosystem.
Rounding off her stay in the city, she will meet with members of the local Indian diaspora before heading southeast.
Leading India's Voice at the G20 in Asheville
The focal point of Sitharaman's US tour will take place in Asheville, North Carolina, where she will lead the Indian delegation at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meetings from August 31 to September 1. Held under the current US presidency of the G20, the gathering convenes economic chiefs and central bank heads to address pressing global macroeconomic policy, financial sector resilience, and sustainable development finance. The ministerial dialogue follows two days of technical deliberations by finance and central bank deputies.
India's active involvement in the G20 Finance Track serves as a critical mechanism for championing the economic interests of emerging economies while contributing to strategies aimed at global stability, reform of multilateral development institutions, and international financial cooperation.
Wall Street Engagements and NASDAQ Ceremony
Following the G20 talks, Sitharaman will travel to New York for a series of high-level meetings with major American financial firms, fund managers, and multinational leaders. She is set to hold bilateral sessions with chief executives to discuss direct foreign investment, structural financial market linkages, and India’s evolving capital market infrastructure.
A major highlight of her Wall Street schedule will be a special invitation hosted by NASDAQ, where the Finance Minister will participate in its iconic market bell-ringing ceremony. Official sources noted that the engagement offers valuable insights into the convergence of capital markets and financial technology—an area where India continues to expand through digital public infrastructure and financial innovations.
