NEW DELHI — Monsoon activity has intensified nationwide as a vigorous weather system continues to drive moderate to heavy rainfall across multiple states. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued warnings for widespread precipitation, potential landslides in hilly terrains, and hazardous conditions at sea.
According to meteorologists, a active low-pressure system coupled with the monsoon trough lingering over south Rajasthan is fueling intense downpours across northern, central, and western regions.
North & Himalayan Belt: Landslide and Flood Risks Rise
Parts of northern India are bracing for substantial rainfall over the coming days:
Delhi & NCR: The capital and neighboring regions in Haryana are expected to record widespread showers ranging between 100 mm and 250 mm.
Himalayan States: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is projected across Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Authorities in Uttarakhand have placed nine districts—including Uttarkashi and Chamoli—under a Yellow Alert due to heightened risks of sudden landslides, mudslides, and crucial road blockages.
Plains: Punjab and Western Uttar Pradesh are also slated for widespread rain spells through the week.
Central & Western Regions: Vigorous Monsoon Activity
Monsoon currents remain strong over central and western India:
Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh: Vigorous rainfall accompanied by frequent thunderstorms and lightning is forecast across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the Vidarbha region, with eastern Madhya Pradesh facing isolated spells of extremely heavy downpours.
Maharashtra & Gujarat: Heavy rainfall is set to persist across Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, and Gujarat throughout the week, raising concerns over localized waterlogging in low-lying urban areas.
East & Northeast India: Deficit Concerns in Bihar, Heavy Rain in Northeast
While northeastern states—including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura—prepare for intense rain spells capable of causing localized flooding, conditions in eastern states present a mixed picture:
Bihar: Despite heavy cloud cover and stifling humidity driven by moist Bay of Bengal winds, Bihar continues to experience a monsoon rainfall deficit of nearly 36%, sparking concerns for local agriculture and groundwater recharge.
Odisha & West Bengal: Under the influence of fresh low-pressure formations, Odisha has been placed under a state-wide yellow alert, while West Bengal and Jharkhand continue to witness steady rainfall.
South Peninsula & Coastal Warnings
Southern states including Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu will continue to see scattered to widespread showers over the week.
In light of squally weather and choppy waters, the IMD has issued a strict advisory instructing fishermen to avoid venturing into designated sectors of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal until sea conditions normalize.
