TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN — The Indian U20 men’s football team ended a two-decade wait on Sunday by qualifying for the AFC U20 Asian Cup. A clinical 3-0 victory over regional rivals Bangladesh at the Do'stlik Stadium in Tashkent, combined with host Uzbekistan's 3-0 win over Syria, sealed India’s passage to the continental showpiece.

The Blue Colts finished second in Group B with six points from three matches. Under the tournament’s qualification guidelines, the eight group winners and the seven best second-placed teams across all groups earn tickets to the main event. India's strong tally was sufficient to progress among the top runners-up, ending a drought that stretched back to 2006, when India last featured in the tournament as host.

Relentless Pressing Delivers Breakout Opener

Knowing that only a win would preserve their qualification hopes, head coach Mahesh Gawali’s side pressed high from the opening whistle.

The pressure yielded dividends in the 25th minute. Forward Danny Meitei Laishram hounded Bangladeshi defender Md Abdul Riyad Fahim into a mistake near the edge of the penalty box, forcing a turnover. Hateem Ali gathered the loose ball, skillfully drew two defenders toward him, and slipped a neat pass back to an unmarked Danny. The attacker made no mistake, calmly placing his shot beyond goalkeeper Raj Chowdhury to give India the lead.

Danny nearly doubled the lead nine minutes later with a looping free-kick that dipped rapidly toward goal, but Chowdhury tipped it clear to keep Bangladesh within striking distance heading into half-time.

Acrobatic Stunner and Tactical Masterclass

India maintained control after the break and doubled their advantage on the hour mark. Off a long throw sent into the Bangladesh penalty area, Rishikanta Meitei flicked the ball toward Vishal Yadav. Positioned near the far post, Vishal executed an acrobatic finish to beat the keeper, putting the Blue Colts 2-0 up.

Bangladesh increased their attacking intensity in search of a response, but India’s defensive line, anchored by captain Sumit Sharma Brahmacharimayum and goalkeeper Suraj Singh Aheibam, held firm.

In the 72nd minute, Gawali brought on fresh legs, substituting goalscorers Danny and Vishal for Md Arbash and Prashan Jajo. The tactical tweak paid immediate dividends. Seven minutes after entering the pitch, Arbash capped off a flowing team move initiated by Yaipharemba Chingakham by unleashing a powerful left-footed drive into the roof of the net to make it 3-0.

The 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup will be hosted in China. Beyond continental glory, the main tournament carries significant stakes: the top four finishing teams in China will earn direct qualification for the FIFA U20 World Cup 2027.
