MILWAUKEE: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a series of high-level, "productive discussions" with US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers' meeting in Milwaukee. The talks centered on fast-tracking the early conclusion of a mutually beneficial interim agreement under the broader India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Goyal shared details of the interaction, stating, “Had a productive discussion with USTR Greer towards early conclusion of a mutually beneficial interim agreement under the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement.” The two leaders also exchanged insights on ongoing G20 deliberations under the current US presidency.

The high-stakes bilateral meeting coincided with a telephone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump. Both leaders reviewed comprehensive progress across multiple facets of bilateral cooperation, spanning trade, defense, energy, critical technologies, and other domains of mutual strategic interest.

While India and the US initially announced the framework finalization for the first phase of the BTA back in February, subsequent shifts in the American tariff landscape triggered renewed negotiations to fine-tune the framework.

Addressing the core strategy behind the pact earlier, Goyal noted that the trade framework is essentially "done and dusted". He emphasized that the final execution hinges on securing the right competitive advantage for Indian exporters in the American market relative to key competitors such as China, ASEAN nations, and Bangladesh.

As discussions progress, both nations remain committed to ironing out remaining differences to establish a balanced framework that bolsters economic resilience and unlocks deeper commercial opportunities for both economies.
