HARARE — Blazing half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma, complemented by a clinical bowling performance, propelled India to an emphatic 90-run victory over Zimbabwe in the second T20I at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday, granting the tourists an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Chasing a daunting target of 220 runs, Zimbabwe's reply disintegrated early under continuous pressure from the Indian attack. The hosts found themselves reeling at five wickets down inside the opening nine overs and were ultimately bowled out for 129.
The series victory arrives as a major relief for newly appointed T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, following back-to-back series setbacks against Ireland and England.
Early Hiccups Turned into Heavy Assault
Opting to bat first, India weathered an initial stumble, losing open-fielders Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi cheaply to leave the scoreboard reading 29 for two. Sooryavanshi showed flashes of intent with a brisk 20 off 9 balls—hitting Richard Ngarava for a 4-6-4-4 boundary sequence—before mistiming a short delivery to mid-on.
However, Ishan Kishan anchored the recovery alongside captain Iyer (25), sharing a 66-run third-wicket stand before pairing up with Tilak Varma to construct a decisive 94-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Kishan reached his half-century off 31 deliveries before accelerating violently, plundering his remaining 31 runs off just 13 balls. Targeting the leg-side with precision, the left-hander repeatedly punished Zimbabwe's bowling attack to finish with a command performance of 81.
Tilak Varma matched Kishan’s intensity with an unbeaten 60 off just 23 balls. Striking Blessing Muzarabani for three consecutive boundaries and taking down Brad Evans over mid-wicket, Varma helped India plunder 61 runs in the final five overs, setting a towering total of 219 for 5.
Bowlers Wrap Up the Job
In reply, Zimbabwe attempted a counter-offensive through Brian Bennett (32 off 19 balls), who targeted debutant pacer Yash Thakur with consecutive boundaries. However, Thakur quickly adjusted his line, extracting revenge as Bennett mistimed a ramp shot into the gloves of Kishan.
From that point forward, the Indian bowling unit applied relentless pressure. While Ryan Burl and Tadi Marumani recorded minor contributions in the 20s, Zimbabwe never threatened to mount a sustained chase.
Part-time spinner Abhishek Sharma proved lethal in the middle overs, picking up 3 for 17, while Thakur finished with 2 for 30.
The single setback for India occurred when fast bowler Prince Yadav pulled up clutching his hamstring after taking 2 for 10 in 1.2 overs, leaving the field prematurely and raising potential concerns for the final match of the series.
India and Zimbabwe will face off in the third and final T20I at the same venue on Sunday.
