JAIPUR: In a remarkable display of surgical excellence, a team of specialist doctors at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College and Hospital in Jaipur has successfully performed a rare, high-risk surgery to remove a gigantic 28.6 kg retroperitoneal sarcoma from a 59-year-old woman.
The intricate procedure, which lasted approximately three hours, required extraordinary precision. The massive tumour was deeply embedded and intertwined with critical life-sustaining organs and major blood vessels, including the intestines, liver, pancreas, urinary bladder, and main arteries. Adding to the surgical challenge, the patient’s ureter was positioned directly in front of the mass, compounding the risk of inadvertent damage during dissection.
Led by Dr. Jeevan Kankaria, the surgical team meticulously navigated around these delicate structures to safely separate and excise the giant growth without inflicting harm on the surrounding vital organs. Medical experts note that giant retroperitoneal sarcomas weighing over 20 kg are exceptionally rare, with only around 20 such documented cases existing in global medical literature.
The successful operation was a collaborative triumph involving a dedicated team of surgeons, anaesthetists, and nursing staff. The surgical unit included Dr. Devendra Saini, Dr. Garima, Dr. Ashima, Dr. Geetansh, Dr. Akash, Dr. Devansh, Dr. Rajat, and Dr. Himanshu. The crucial anesthesia and critical care support were managed by Dr. Sushil Bhati, Dr. Sunil Chauhan, Dr. Kanchan, Dr. Deendayal, and Dr. Divya Bhatnagar, alongside nursing staff member Yunus Ali.
Following the grueling procedure, the patient was immediately transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) for close monitoring. Showing a satisfactory and steady recovery, she was subsequently shifted to the general ward for further observation and post-operative care.
Principal of SMS Medical College Dr. Deepak Maheshwari, Superintendent Dr. Mrinal Joshi, and Head of the Department Dr. Richa Jain lauded the medical and nursing teams for their exceptional skill, coordination, and dedication in executing this complex life-saving surgery.
