NEW DELHI — India on Sunday observed the 27th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the country in remembering the extraordinary courage, supreme sacrifice, and unshakeable resolve of the Indian Armed Forces.
Commemorated annually on July 26, Kargil Vijay Diwas marks the successful culmination of Operation Vijay in 1999, during which Indian forces decisively evicted Pakistani intruders from icy, high-altitude positions along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil sector of Ladakh.
President Murmu Pays Homage to Martyrs
In an official message shared on social media platform X, President Droupadi Murmu expressed profound reverence for the soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty.
"On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay humble tribute to those valiant warriors who laid down their lives for the protection of our motherland," President Murmu stated. She emphasized that their matchless courage, resolute commitment, and deep patriotism remain gold standards for the armed forces, adding that the nation would forever remain in their debt.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended the nation's gratitude to the bravehearts, highlighting how their bravery under extreme combat and weather conditions continues to inspire millions across the country.
"On Kargil Vijay Diwas, our nation expresses gratitude to the brave soldiers for their extraordinary courage and commitment towards securing India," PM Modi wrote on X. He noted that the warriors' valor in the face of daunting adversity will permanently remain a source of immense national pride and serve as an inspiration for future generations.
Tributes Echo Across the Leadership
Top dignitaries from across the political spectrum joined the nation in honoring the Kargil heroes. Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed their solemn gratitude to the fallen soldiers and their families.
At the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, high-ranking military leaders—including Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Dhiraj Seth—laid wreaths to honor the fallen troops who reclaimed the rugged heights of Tololing, Tiger Hill, and Point 4875 twenty-seven years ago.
The anniversary serves as a timeless reminder of the steadfast dedication of India's defence forces in preserving the nation's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
