NEW DELHI — A day after police initiated legal action over derogatory remarks directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a student demonstration in the national capital, an apology video featuring the minor involved has surfaced online.
In the video circulating across social media platforms, the teenager is seen pleading for forgiveness with folded hands, stating that she was influenced by fellow demonstrators and regrets her actions.
"People there were using objectionable language against the Prime Minister. I came under their influence and repeated those words. Whatever I said was wrong and should never have been said," the girl stated in the clip.
"First and Last Mistake"
According to her account in the video, she had originally visited Connaught Place with friends before inadvertently coming across the demonstration organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar on July 23. She explained that she realized the gravity of her behavior only after the video went viral on social media platforms, leaving her deeply embarrassed.
Describing her actions as an isolated lapse in judgment, the girl repeatedly requested the public and authorities not to define her life by a single incident.
"I am only 15 years old. Whatever I did was not worthy of forgiveness. This is the first and last mistake of my life. I will never repeat such a mistake," she added, offering an explicit apology to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the nation.
Age Discrepancy Contention
The minor also highlighted an discrepancy regarding her personal details in police documents. She alleged that the First Information Report (FIR) registered in connection with the incident lists her age as 25 years, whereas she is actually 15 years old.
Independent verification of the age claim and the video's origin remains pending by law enforcement authorities.
PM Modi Appeals for Compassion
The video emerged shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the controversy surrounding the Jantar Mantar rally. In a video message, PM Modi expressed pain over the derogatory language targeted at him and his late mother, but emphasized that the youngsters involved were merely "misguided."
"Children make mistakes. Childhood is also the time to correct those mistakes," PM Modi remarked, urging society and legal institutions to take a constructive approach.
"It is our duty to show them the right path. Dragging them to courts or harassing them in society will not change the situation. I want to forgive them and hope society will also accept this sentiment," he added.
Background of the Legal Proceedings
The controversy originated during a student demonstration at Jantar Mantar on July 23, where several participants allegedly raised abusive slogans targeting the Prime Minister.
Following a initial complaint filed in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, police registered a Zero FIR under relevant legal provisions. The case was subsequently transferred to the Parliament Street Police Station in New Delhi for jurisdiction-appropriate investigation.
In parallel, Delhi Police registered a separate FIR regarding the dissemination of the video clips online. Authorities have issued formal notices to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), directing the platform to remove the offending content and preserve electronic logs for ongoing investigative procedures.
