GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday to review the worsening flood situation across the state, assuring complete support from the central government to tackle the crisis.
During the phone call, the Chief Minister briefed Prime Minister Modi on the extent of the damage caused by the continuous deluge, the current status of inundated areas, and the ongoing relief operations managed by state and district authorities.
Chief Minister Sarma shared details of the interaction on social media, expressing gratitude for the Prime Minister’s proactive outreach. "Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji called me today to inquire about the flood situation in Assam. I briefed him on the current scenario and the measures being taken by the state government to provide relief to affected families," Sarma stated. He added that PM Modi assured him of all possible help and resources from the Center to aid recovery efforts.
Continuous heavy rainfall across Assam and neighboring hilly regions over the past few weeks has triggered wide-scale flooding, swelling major rivers including the Brahmaputra above danger levels in several districts. Lakhs of residents have been affected, with large swathes of agricultural land submerged, infrastructure damaged, and thousands forced to take shelter in temporary relief camps set up by local administrations.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local administrative teams, remains deployed in high-risk districts to conduct rescue missions, evacuate stranded families, and distribute essential supplies, including food packets, clean drinking water, and medical aid.
With the central government promising full assistance, state authorities expect additional relief packages and logistics support to accelerate restoration efforts once water levels begin to recede.
