ZURICH — Double Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra has officially secured his place in the men's javelin throw Diamond League Final, despite choosing not to compete in the final qualifying leg held in Zurich on Thursday.
The 2026 Diamond League circuit concluded its preliminary series with the Zurich meet, which served as the last opportunity for athletes to collect qualifying points. Despite featuring in only two of the five scheduled qualifying events throughout the season, Chopra’s point tally was sufficient to keep him inside the top six list required to advance to the final in Brussels.
Chopra's qualification stems from strong performances earlier in the season. He earned seven points after finishing second at the Lausanne Diamond League with a throw of 88.05m, and added five points by placing fourth in Doha with an 85.69m effort. With 12 points in total, the 28-year-old superstar finished sixth overall in the season-long standings.
Pathirage Dominates Zurich Leg
While Chopra sat out, Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage stole the spotlight in Zurich with a monstrous throw of 92.07m to capture first place. Pathirage, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, extended his dominant run this season—marking his second throw over the 90-meter barrier this year.
Former world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada took second place in Zurich with a best effort of 86.93m, while Poland’s Dawid Wegner finished third with an 85.16m throw.
Final Standings & Qualification System
Under the Diamond League format, points are awarded to the top eight finishers at each qualifying meet, ranging from eight points for first place down to one point for eighth place. The top six athletes with the highest accumulated points advance to the season finale.
