NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level strategy meeting at his office in Parliament on Thursday, bringing together top Cabinet ministers and senior security officials to discuss ongoing legislative matters and the intensifying parliamentary standoff.
The strategic huddle was attended by key government figures, including Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, BJP President and Union Minister J.P. Nadda, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and Dr. P.K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, were also present during the deliberation.
Standoff in Parliament & Legislative Agenda
The high-stakes meeting coincides with an escalating confrontation between the ruling government and opposition parties during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. The friction centers on alleged police excesses against student demonstrators during the July 20 'Chalo Sansad' march in the national capital.
The closed-door discussion also comes at a crucial juncture for the government's legislative roadmap, as the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 moves to the Rajya Sabha for consideration. The anti-paper leak measure successfully passed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday via a voice vote.
Opposition Sharpens Attack
Political tempers flared earlier in the lower house during debate on the proposed examination anti-fraud law. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a direct attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of authorizing police force against student protesters.
In a subsequent press briefing in New Delhi, Gandhi escalated his criticism, calling for a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the incident and questioning the government's handling of the demonstrations.
With proceedings in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha experiencing frequent disruptions and walkouts, the Prime Minister's top-level consultations signal a concerted push to align executive strategy and navigate legislative priorities through the remaining days of the session.
