NEW DELHI — Marking National Handloom Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called upon citizens across the country to celebrate India’s rich textile tradition by purchasing native handloom items and taking to social media to showcase their styles.

In a special message shared across his social media platforms, the Prime Minister encouraged people to post short videos—including popular "Get Ready With Me" (GRWM) reels—featuring their favorite handloom attire using the hashtag #NationalHandloomDay.

Describing the handloom sector as a crucial catalyst for socio-economic growth, PM Modi stressed that traditional weaving serves as a vital pillar of rural empowerment and women-led development while contributing directly to the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India).

"Today, on National Handloom Day, we celebrate India’s rich and vibrant handloom heritage. We also salute the skill, creativity, and dedication of our weavers and artisans. For generations, they have preserved and enriched our traditions," PM Modi stated, reaffirming the government's continued commitment to backing local craftspeople and small enterprises.

In a video message released ahead of the occasion, the Prime Minister highlighted the historic significance of August 7, noting its connection to the Swadeshi Movement launched in 1905 against British colonial rule. Just as the movement united the nation over a century ago in support of indigenous industries, Modi urged citizens to bring similar fervor to supporting modern-day weavers and local artisans.

First observed in 2015, National Handloom Day commemorates the legacy of the Swadeshi Movement while bringing national and international attention to India's handloom weavers, according to report details from Alter News. By urging youth and digital creators to leverage trends like GRWM, the Prime Minister aims to blend centuries-old heritage with contemporary pop culture, creating sustainable livelihoods for millions engaged in the handloom industry.
