PATNA / SAMASTIPUR — Residents of Bihar’s Samastipur district were left awe-struck and unsettled on September 26 after a rare and dramatic natural phenomenon—a tornadic waterspout—formed over the region. Stretching seamlessly from the surface of local water bodies up into the churning gray clouds above, the spinning column of air and mist quickly drew massive crowds and went viral across social media platforms.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Patna officially acknowledged the occurrence, sharing visual documentation of the event that captured a funnel-shaped vortex bridging earth and sky.

An Eerie Spectacle

According to local accounts from the Mohiuddin Nagar block area, the unusual weather event unfolded amidst heavy winds and persistent rainfall. Witnesses described a sudden funnel cloud materializing over a local water body, rapidly intensifying into a massive, rotating white column.

"It looked as though an invisible giant force was sucking water directly from the pond up into the heavens," said a local resident from Samastipur. While mesmerizing to watch from a safe distance, the eerie column prompted immediate concern among farmers and villagers worried about potential property damage.

What Do Scientists Say?

Atmospheric scientists and meteorologists have linked the occurrence to the broader regional weather patterns currently affecting eastern India. Severe continuous rainfall, high humidity, and surface winds driven by a recent deep depression system created the ideal ingredients for atmospheric instability.

When warm, moist air near the surface rapidly ascends and collides with cold air currents aloft, it triggers powerful vertical rotation. Experts note that while waterspouts are generally categorized into fair-weather variants or more aggressive tornadic types—which are essentially tornadoes that form over water—witnessing them in inland plains of India remains an uncommon occurrence.

Meteorologists explain that contrary to popular belief, a waterspout does not physically vacuum massive amounts of water upward; rather, the visible funnel is primarily condensed water vapor created inside the rapidly spinning vortex.

IMD Warning and Advisory

The IMD continues to monitor regional weather systems closely as heavy downpours and shifting wind patterns persist across Bihar. While the Samastipur waterspout dissipated safely without causing major structural devastation, authorities have advised residents to exercise caution during severe squall lines and deep depression-led spells, noting that similar vortex formations moving onshore can pose significant hazards to vulnerable homes and agriculture.
