New Delhi: In a tragic and shocking turn of events, a 54-year-old retired musician from Manipur was brutally beaten to death in South East Delhi after he simply requested a group of men to stop making noise outside his home late at night.

The victim, identified as Chongtham Vikram Singh, was allegedly assaulted by a group of delivery workers and local dhaba staff right outside his residence in Kilokari village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Sunlight Colony police station.

A Deadly Confrontation Over Midnight Noise

According to preliminary police investigations and accounts from the victim's family, the fatal confrontation unfolded late Sunday night. Relatives reported that a group of youths, purportedly under the influence of alcohol, had been creating a nuisance in the neighborhood for several days.

Around midnight, Singh stepped downstairs to confront the group and asked them to lower their voices. However, this simple request quickly escalated into unprovoked violence. The alleged offenders brutally attacked Singh with punches and blows, leaving him critically wounded.

His son, Yaiphaba, rushed him to the Holy Family Hospital in a desperate bid to save his life. Tragically, Singh succumbed to his severe internal injuries while undergoing treatment.

Police Investigation and Arrests

The incident formally came to light on September 7, when a PCR call (recorded as GD No. 10A) was made to the Sunlight Colony police station. Following the assault, police launched a swift investigation.

“Some suspects, including a minor, have been detained. Further facts will be established during the investigation,” a senior police official confirmed. The exact sequence of events leading to the musician's death is still being probed. A post-mortem examination is currently underway at AIIMS to determine the precise cause of death and the full extent of the injuries.

Outrage and Demands for Justice

Singh’s sudden and violent death has sent shockwaves through the Manipuri and broader Northeast communities residing in the national capital. Unlike a newcomer to the city, Singh was a well-settled family man who had made Delhi his long-term home.

Following the tragic news, members of various Manipuri organizations and Northeast community groups gathered outside the Sunlight Colony police station in large numbers. Activists alleged that they had to build pressure on the local authorities just to get a formal FIR registered.

"We want justice for Vikram. The investigation should be transparent, and those responsible should be held accountable," demanded Lily, a prominent Delhi-based Manipuri activist.

To honor Singh's memory and his lifelong contribution to music, local Northeast youths organized a solemn candlelight vigil.

The heartbreaking incident has once again ignited deep concerns regarding the safety and security of Northeast Indians in Delhi. While the police have not yet established if the brutal attack was motivated by Singh's ethnicity, it adds to a worrying pattern of assaults, racial abuse, and harassment reported against people from the Northeast in the capital this year.
