SAGAR, MADHYA PRADESH — In a major push toward sustainable agriculture, scientists at Sagar University in Madhya Pradesh are turning to microscopic soil inhabitants to revolutionize soybean farming.

As Madhya Pradesh—long celebrated as India’s "Soybean State"—faces declining production levels and stiff competition from neighboring Maharashtra, researchers are testing a biological alternative: using beneficial, naturally occurring soil fungi to enhance crop yields without a single gram of chemical fertilizer or pesticide.

The initiative, funded by the Madhya Pradesh Council of Science and Technology, is spearheaded by Dr. Sonal Mathur, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany at Sagar University. Dr. Mathur, who features on Stanford University’s list of the top 2% of scientists worldwide for two consecutive years, aims to overturn the common perception that fungi are exclusively destructive.

Harvesting Nature's Hidden Allies

"We generally assume that fungi are always harmful pathogens," Dr. Mathur explained. "However, the species used in our soybean research could prove extraordinarily beneficial. The extensive use of chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides damages soil ecology and carries health risks for humans and animals. Our goal is to achieve equal or superior crop performance through an entirely biological process."

The research centers on Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF)—microscopic organisms indigenous to soil that establish a symbiotic relationship with plant root systems.

Because AMF cannot produce their own food through photosynthesis, they receive carbohydrates from the host plant. In exchange, the fungal filaments extend deep into the surrounding earth, acting as an secondary root network that delivers essential nutrients—specifically phosphorus and nitrogen—along with water directly to the crop.

This natural exchange mechanism significantly improves a plant’s tolerance against environmental stress factors, such as drought, high salinity, and soil-borne diseases, while simultaneously restoring long-term soil health.

Focusing on the Soils of Bundelkhand

While previous research by Dr. Mathur focused on soil microbial populations in the Malwa region, her new project concentrates specifically on native fungal strains in Sagar and the broader Bundelkhand district.

"Many local farmers are completely unaware of the beneficial biological activity occurring beneath their fields," Dr. Mathur said. "By isolating and cultivating native Bundelkhand fungal strains, we plan to create a tailored biological inoculant that can eventually be scaled up for widespread agricultural use."

Boosting Nutrition and Human Health Benefits

Beyond increasing field productivity, the study is investigating how these fungal associations enhance soybean nutritional profiles. Researchers are monitoring changes in secondary metabolites—particularly antioxidants—and natural phytohormones.

Dr. Mathur highlighted potential health applications, noting that biologically elevated plant hormones could offer natural alternatives in health settings where synthetic or animal-derived steroids are currently used.

Additionally, the project aims to broaden public awareness regarding soybean consumption beyond cooking oil extraction. Rich in plant protein, green soybean pods, sprouts, and soy-fortified grains provide significant dietary benefits.

If successful, the field-testing phase could provide soybean farmers across Central India with a cost-effective, environmentally friendly roadmap to boost harvests, protect soil biodiversity, and safeguard human health.
