Sarfaraz Khan Shares Instagram Post After Test Recall for Sri Lanka Series as Sai Sudharsan Cover

COLOMBO / HYDERABAD — Indian middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan marked his return to the national Test setup by donning the Indian training kit and sharing a photograph on social media with his father and long-time coach, Naushad Khan.

The 28-year-old Mumbai batter was drafted into the squad by the BCCI Selection Committee as an official replacement for left-handed top-order batter Sai Sudharsan, who was ruled out of the tour due to a right toe stress reaction. India’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka is set to kick off in Galle on August 15, 2026.

According to an official statement issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sudharsan is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru and has shown significant progress under medical supervision.

"Sai Sudharsan has been ruled out of the Test series against Sri Lanka. The left-handed batter, who has been at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru, has made significant progress in his recovery from the right toe stress reaction and is recovering well," the BCCI stated.

"The Men's Selection Committee has named Sarfaraz Khan as a replacement for Sai Sudharsan for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. He will link up with the Indian squad in Colombo before the team travels to Galle for the first Test match," the release added.

Sarfaraz’s recall brings him back into the Test fold after a gap of two years. He last represented India during the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Despite commanding an exceptional domestic record—averaging 64.73 across 62 first-class matches—Sarfaraz has so far featured in only six Test matches for the national team.

However, securing a place in the playing XI for the series opener will present a challenge. Fellow middle-order competitor Devdutt Padikkal recently staked a strong claim by hitting a century during India's warm-up fixture in Sri Lanka.

The upcoming series carries heightened importance for team management. Under head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, the Indian setup faces intense scrutiny following a difficult stretch of results, including a Test series loss to South Africa, an ODI series defeat against New Zealand, and a recent T20I series setback against England.
