GLASGOW — Police Scotland and the UK Home Office have initiated multi-agency inquiries after several international athletes went missing in the wake of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which concluded in Glasgow.

Local law enforcement confirmed receiving official missing-persons reports after multiple competitors failed to join their national contingents for scheduled return flights home.

Reports indicate that at least four members of Uganda’s national boxing team dropped off the grid shortly after the competition ended. According to African sports news outlets, officials confirmed the missing boxers failed to assemble with team management, with at least one team member reportedly intending to seek asylum on British soil.

In a separate development, Pakistani sports authorities reported the sudden disappearance of boxer Qudratullah. Official sources noted that Qudratullah failed to report for the team's departure flight and was unaccounted for when contingent managers searched his team accommodation room.

Addressing the situation, a spokesperson for Police Scotland stated:

"Police Scotland has received reports of several athletes who are unaccounted for. Inquiries are ongoing to assess the circumstances, and early engagement is taking place with the Home Office."

A Recurring Trend at Major Multisport Events

The disappearance of athletes following major international events held in the UK and Australia is not unprecedented. During the 2014 Commonwealth Games—also hosted by Glasgow—dozens of athletes and officials vanished from their team quarters, with many subsequently lodging asylum applications or disappearing into local communities.

Similar incidents disrupted previous editions of the event:

  • Birmingham 2022: Two Pakistani boxers, Suleman Baloch and Nazirullah Khan, disappeared from the athletes' village just hours before their scheduled departure, despite their passports remaining in the custody of team management.

  • Gold Coast 2018: Australian immigration authorities were tasked with locating over 50 athletes and team officials who overstayed their visas and failed to return to their home countries.

Context of the 2026 Glasgow Games

The 2026 Commonwealth Games operated under a significantly condensed format and budget after original host Victoria, Australia, withdrew due to mounting financial pressures. Glasgow stepped in on short notice to salvage the competition, hosting a streamlined schedule that saw several high-profile sports, including wrestling and archery, dropped from the program.

Despite the scaled-back nature of the event, thousands of competitors from across the Commonwealth participated. Uganda concluded its campaign ranked 27th overall on the medal table with three medals (two silver and one bronze), while Pakistan finished its campaign with a single bronze medal.
