Celebrations erupted across Sasrauli village in Haryana’s Jhajjar district as young shooter Suruchi Singh clinched a prestigious gold medal at the ongoing Asian Games. Teamed up with Kamaljeet, Suruchi triumphed in the intensely contested 10m air pistol mixed team event, cementing a phenomenal victory for India.

The Indian duo put up a stellar display of precision and composure, dominating the final from the very beginning to finish with an impressive score of 484.6 points. They comfortably outclassed the South Korean pair, who lagged behind to secure the silver medal with 478 points, while Iran bagged the bronze.

From Wrestling Mat to Shooting Range

While Suruchi's name is now etched in shooting history, her athletic journey could have looked entirely different. According to her family, shooting was never her first choice. She initially aspired to become a wrestler. However, destiny intervened when she suffered a severe collarbone fracture during a wrestling match.

Refusing to let the injury derail her sporting dreams, Suruchi stepped away from wrestling and pivoted to shooting—a life-altering choice that ultimately led her to international glory.

Sacrifices That Shaped a Champion

Behind the glittering gold medal lies a story of immense sacrifice and unwavering family support. Suruchi’s father, Indra, played a pivotal role in scripting her success. To ensure that his children received top-tier training, he made the bold decision to leave his job in the Indian Army.

Making his daughter's career his absolute priority, Indra would travel approximately 100 kilometers daily to take Suruchi to the Bhiwani Stadium for rigorous practice sessions.

"I had a dream that my daughter should succeed," an emotional Indra shared. "I had full faith that her hard work and dedication would one day bear fruit."

The sporting spirit runs deep in the household. Suruchi's brother, Nishant, is also a passionate shooter. The siblings practice continuously at a makeshift shooting range built by the family right at home, motivating each other to push boundaries.

A Hero’s Welcome Awaits

Back home in Jhajjar, neighbours, relatives, and sports enthusiasts have formed a continuous stream of well-wishers at the family residence, distributing sweets and offering congratulations.

Suruchi’s mother, Sudesh, expressed overwhelming joy over her daughter's monumental achievement. "I am extremely proud of my daughter. She worked exceptionally hard, practicing from morning till evening," Sudesh said. "We are eagerly waiting for her to return home, and she will be given a grand welcome with traditional beats and her favorite homemade desi ghee delicacies."
