KOLKATA — Police in Kolkata have launched a formal investigation after legendary former Indian cricket team captain and ex-BCCI President Sourav Ganguly received multiple threatening letters targeting him and his wife, acclaimed Odissi dancer Dona Ganguly.

The security apparatus in West Bengal has been put on high alert following an official complaint lodged on behalf of Ganguly's office with the Thakurpukur Police Station.

Aggressive Letters Target Former Captain and Family

According to police sources, the threatening correspondence had been arriving over the past six months. Initially, the family dismissed the notes as communications from overly zealous fans. However, the tone of the letters grew increasingly aggressive and explicit, forcing the family to seek law enforcement intervention.

The latest letter, written entirely in English, arrived at the office of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) on Monday. Opened by Ganguly's personal staff, the note contained direct threats to "eliminate" and "finish" the cricketer and his family members.

"We are taking the complaint with utmost seriousness and have initiated a comprehensive investigation," a senior Kolkata Police official stated. "Investigators are closely examining the physical letters, analyzing the courier trail, and working to determine the origin and identity of the sender."

Police Trace Sender Name; Security Review Requested

Preliminary investigative findings indicate that the letters were sent using the sender name 'Arun Kumar', listing an address in Belgharia on Kolkata's northern outskirts. Detectives are currently working to ascertain whether the individual named is directly involved or if an unknown perpetrator misused the identity to dispatch the threats.

In addition to local law enforcement, West Bengal’s state security department has been officially notified to assess any necessary adjustments to Ganguly's protective details.

Ganguly currently receives 'Y-category' security protection, which was reassessed following a periodic threat-level review by state authorities. In light of the recent escalation, supporters and well-wishers have urged authorities to review and potentially enhance his security coverage to safeguard the family against potential risks.
