GUWAHATI — The flood crisis in Assam has taken a devastating turn, with 10 more lives lost over the last 24 hours—including four children. This brings the overall death toll to 41, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Six other people—three men and three women—remain missing.
The state’s daily bulletin paints a dark picture: the recent wave of flooding has impacted over 653,000 residents across 11 districts, including Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Dibrugarh, and Karbi Anglong. Sivasagar and Jorhat have been hit the hardest, each reporting three recent casualties and around 90,000 affected residents.
Relief efforts are underway at full speed. Rescuers from the Army, NDRF, SDRF, local police, and emergency services have pulled more than 8,500 stranded people to safety from flooded zones.
However, heavy rainfall shows little sign of stopping. Major rivers across the region—including the Brahmaputra and its tributaries—are swelling fast. Rivers like the Dikhou, Dhansiri, and Kushiyara have breached danger marks, while the Disang River at Nanglamuraghat has surged past its highest recorded flood levels, keeping rescue teams on high alert.
