GUWAHATI — The flood situation in Assam remains grim as two more lives were lost to floodwaters in Sivasagar district, taking the state’s total deluge-related death toll to 87 this season. According to the latest daily bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 1.28 lakh people across seven districts continue to endure severe inundation and disruption.
The worst-hit regions currently reeling under floodwaters include Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Biswanath, and Lakhimpur. Sivasagar accounts for the highest number of affected residents, with 55,200 individuals suffering from waterlogging, followed by Charaideo with 34,050 and Jorhat with 20,209 people impacted.
Official reports indicate that floodwaters have submerged 380 villages and ruined approximately 14,230 hectares of agricultural land across the affected districts, dealing a significant blow to local farmers and rural livelihoods.
In response to the crisis, local district administrations have set up 38 relief camps providing shelter to 11,066 displaced individuals. Additionally, 17 relief distribution centers remain operational to furnish essential provisions, drinking water, and medical aid to submerged communities.
River levels across the state also remain a major point of concern. The Dhansiri River is continuing to flow well above its danger threshold at Numaligarh in Golaghat district, keeping nearby low-lying areas on high alert. Emergency rescue teams and local administration officers remain deployed on the ground to monitor rising water levels and facilitate relief operations.
