HYDERABAD — OpenAI’s popular artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, suffered a sudden global disruption on Saturday, rendering the platform inaccessible to millions of users across multiple continents.
Outage tracking platform DownDetector recorded a massive spike in user reports, confirming that the connectivity issues span major regions, including India, the United States, Europe, Japan, and Australia. Users attempting to send prompts or log into the web and mobile applications were greeted with error messages and failed connection attempts.
Recognizing the widespread disruption, OpenAI officially acknowledged the situation on its system status page, confirming that its engineering team is actively working to trace the root cause.
"We are investigating the issue for the listed services," the company said in a brief official update.
The sudden downtime hit both free users and paid subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and enterprise accounts, sparking a flood of reports across social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), where hashtags such as #ChatGPTDown quickly began trending.
While OpenAI has not yet revealed the exact cause behind the server collapse or an estimated time for full recovery, the company noted that updates will be posted on its status channel as the investigation progresses.
