NEW DELHI: Political tensions reached a boiling point in the national capital as the opposition INDIA bloc, led by the Congress party, launched a massive demonstration march toward the Supreme Court. The protesters are pressing for the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, citing serious concerns over voter list integrity and recent electoral controversies.
The high-stakes protest follows days of simmering friction and high-profile detentions across Delhi. Prominent leaders and opposition figures have rallied against what they term systemic irregularities and administrative high-handedness. Senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, rallied supporters on social media, declaring that citizens, civil society groups, youth, and opposition parties are standing united beyond party lines to protect the Constitution and democratic values.
Ahead of the march, the Delhi Police and central security agencies enforced stringent security measures across central Delhi. Heavy barricades were erected near key junctions such as Mandi House, Jantar Mantar, and the AICC Headquarters. In addition, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) temporarily shut down entry and exit gates at six key metro stations—including Patel Chowk, Janpath, Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, and Barakhamba Road—to curb unauthorized gatherings and manage crowd control.
Meanwhile, political friction expanded on multiple fronts. Reports emerged that Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant declined a request from Rahul Gandhi for a formal meeting regarding the political dispute, noting that the underlying issues remain sub judice. Concurrently, local political tensions flared up further as administrative and legal scrutiny intensified following demonstrations across various regional party bhawans and public locations.
Opposition leaders have vowed to continue their agitation, maintaining that their campaign for accountability and transparency within the election machinery will persist until concrete actions are taken. Security forces remain on high alert across the capital as the situation continues to unfold.
