GUWAHATI — Senior Congress leader and MP Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday slammed the Assam government over a "severe delay" in supplying essential relief materials to thousands of flood-affected residents in the state.
Describing the situation as an "epic humanitarian crisis," the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha urged state authorities to provide a transparent accounting of flood casualties and speed up aid delivery.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Gogoi highlighted the mounting toll of the disaster: "As of today, 41 people have lost their lives, many are missing. Thousands of people are without any homes and lakhs of people are living without dignity."
Failure of Local Administration Alleged
Having conducted ground visits across the severely hit districts of Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Charaideo, the Jorhat MP stated that he witnessed firsthand a breakdown in local administrative support.
"There is a severe delay in delivering emergency rations, safe drinking water, phenyl, clothes, and bleaching powder," Gogoi claimed.
Demands for Central Assistance & Praise for Youth
To address the long-term aftermath of the deluge, Gogoi requested the Union government to dispatch a team of technical experts and equipment to help displaced families rebuild their homes and restore agricultural activities.
While demanding that the state government ensure relief reaches every affected household without further delay, Gogoi commended civil society and youth groups for stepping up. He praised "numerous groups of young people and Gen Z who have organized relief and are feeding hundreds of families on a daily basis," while directing Congress party workers to maximize assistance efforts in Upper Assam.
