SAN DIEGO — Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio dropped a massive double revelation for gaming fans at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, locking in a release date for God of War Laufey while confirming that a direct sequel centered on Kratos is officially in the works.
God of War Laufey is set to hit store shelves and digital storefronts on February 16, 2027, as an exclusive title for the PlayStation 5. Because the launch falls comfortably ahead of Sony’s internal early-2028 target for phasing out physical media discs, physical collectors will be pleased to know a standard disc release is guaranteed.
A Parallel Tale in the Realm of the Gods
First teased earlier this summer, God of War Laufey shifts the spotlight onto Kratos' late wife, Faye (also known as Laufey the Just), voiced by Daredevil and True Blood star Deborah Ann Woll.
Rather than a forward-looking continuation of the Norse saga, the story runs parallel to the events of 2018’s God of War reboot. Following her death, Faye finds herself fighting through the afterlife of the gods after discovering that the protective measures she crafted for Kratos and their son, Atreus, are under threat. To safeguard her family's future from beyond the grave, the legendary Giant warrior must battle her way through uncharted spiritual realms.
While Faye's presence loomed large over both the 2018 title and God of War Ragnarök, players never actually experienced her in combat during her lifetime. This spin-off aims to bridge that gap by giving players hands-on control of her formidable skills.
"Faye has always been a powerhouse in our lore," said Grace Orlady, Communications Director at Santa Monica Studio. "She and Kratos can both hit incredibly hard and take massive damage, so one of our main priorities has been crafting a playstyle for Faye that feels distinct, fluid, and satisfying."
Orlady noted that the development team merged the speed and acrobatic movement reminiscent of the original Greek-era God of War games with the deliberate, narrative-driven world-building introduced in the Norse saga.
Kratos Sequel Confirmed to Directly Connect
The announcements didn't stop with Faye. Santa Monica Studio's Cory Barlog took the stage to officially confirm that a brand-new God of War title featuring series protagonist Kratos is currently in active development.
While details on the Kratos-led game remain tightly under wraps, Barlog revealed that its storyline will directly link to the events of God of War Laufey. Unlike Laufey, however, industry analysts expect the upcoming Kratos sequel to release past Sony's planned disc deadline, making it a likely candidate for a digital-only launch down the road.
