WASHINGTON/ILLINOIS: U.S. lawmakers have expressed widespread outrage and deep concern following the revelation of a foiled mass shooting plot targeting a Hindu temple in the Aurora area of Illinois.
The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis from Palatine, Illinois, was arrested by law enforcement on October 11. According to court documents and police reports, Paporakis had compiled a disturbing manifesto detailing plans to execute a mass casualty event, explicitly labelling minority groups—including individuals of Indian, Jewish, and African descent—as "subhumans".
Authorities noted that the catastrophic attack was averted purely by chance when the suspect's rifle jammed outside the temple premises, forcing him to abort the mission and drive back home.
The incident has hit close to home for prominent Indian-American lawmakers. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi revealed that he and his family were actively worshipping at the Aurora temple around the time of the targeted threat.
Echoing similar concerns, U.S. Representative Ami Bera and other congressional leaders underscored that the foiled attack demonstrates how dangerous unchecked anti-Indian sentiment and radical white supremacy have become.
Meanwhile, international reactions have also poured in, with India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressing deep concern over the racist nature of the plot and calling for rigorous vigilance and zero tolerance for hate-motivated violence.
