Speaking on the occasion of World Organ Donation Day 2026, healthcare professionals emphasized that organ donation remains one of the most powerful gifts a person can give—restoring independence and vitality to patients previously tied to routine dialysis.
"More than a medical procedure, organ donation is the gift of hope and a second chance at life," said Dr. Amolkumar Patil, Senior Consultant in Urology, Kidney Transplant & Robotic Surgery at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai. "A successful kidney transplant frees patients from dialysis and allows them to return to their families, careers, and daily routines."
How the Body Adapts: Compensatory Hyperfiltration
The human body possesses a remarkable ability to adapt after organ donation or solitary kidney diagnosis. When one kidney is removed or absent, the remaining organ undergoes a physiological adaptation known as compensatory hyperfiltration.
"The remaining kidney compensates by increasing its operational capacity, performing much of the work normally divided between two kidneys," explained Dr. Manjunath S, Additional Director of Nephrology at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru. "Having one kidney does not necessarily translate to a shorter lifespan."

For Bengaluru resident Chethan Basavarajaiah, learning at age 28 that he had been living with only one kidney came as an absolute surprise after a sudden bout of fever and respiratory distress landed him in the hospital. Having lived symptom-free until that moment, his immediate concern was whether he could raise his young child and lead a normal life.
His 72-year-old father stepped forward as a living donor after rigorous medical evaluations confirmed both of his kidneys were in prime condition. Today, more than two and a half years post-transplant, Chethan’s now 75-year-old father continues to farm actively with a single kidney. Chethan himself went on to earn a Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning post-surgery.
Donors, too, experience remarkable recoveries. Dr. Patil shared the story of his patient Meenakshi, who successfully completed a high-altitude trek to Kalsubai—the highest peak in Maharashtra—just six months after donating a kidney.

Medical professionals stress that while single-kidney individuals do not require extreme dietary restrictions, protecting renal function through daily habits is essential.
Recommended Preventative Measures:
Annual Screenings: Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine, eGFR, and urine protein annually.
Medication Caution: Avoid unprescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, which can induce kidney strain.
Lifestyle Control: Maintain a balanced low-sodium diet, stay adequately hydrated, refrain from smoking, and limit highly processed foods and unmonitored protein supplements.
Manage Chronic Conditions: Keep blood pressure, blood sugar, and body weight within target ranges, as hypertension and diabetes remain leading causes of renal degradation in India.
