NEW DELHI: Escalating political tensions in the national capital, the Delhi Police have registered three fresh First Information Reports (FIRs) against senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in connection with the intense opposition protests held on Wednesday.
According to police sources, the newly filed cases encompass multiple serious legal charges, including the alleged assault of on-duty police personnel, obstruction of public and government work, physical manhandling, pushing, and general misbehavior. Several other prominent Congress leaders, opposition MPs, and party workers who participated in the high-voltage demonstration have also been named in the growing list of legal actions.
The protests, spearheaded by the INDIA bloc, witnessed dramatic scenes across central Delhi as opposition leaders and workers poured onto the streets. Demonstrators were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and protesting against controversies surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The situation spiraled out of control when police intercepted buses carrying protesters who were attempting to stage a surprise sit-in at Jantar Mantar. The confrontation intensified significantly when Priyanka Gandhi and several other opposition leaders sat flat on the pavement clutching copies of the Constitution, refusing to move until police forcefully intervened, detaining roughly 91 individuals, including several parliamentarians.
This latest development adds to the mounting legal pressure on the opposition leadership. Authorities have stated that they are meticulously examining video evidence and individual roles to ascertain culpability in the alleged scuffles with security personnel.
Despite the mounting police cases, the opposition has remained defiant, maintaining that their democratic right to protest is being stifled by the administration.
