BHUBANESWAR, ODISHA — Where most people see discarded metal, rusty gears, and junked auto parts destined for the landfill, Bhubaneswar resident Jitendra Patra sees the blueprint for artistic expression.
In a small workshop filled with the metallic tang of cut steel and the hum of welding equipment, Patra transforms discarded garage scrap into intricate, fully functional clocks and timepieces. "Every piece of scrap has a story and a specific geometry," Patra explains. "When you take a rusted gear assembly or a worn-out drive chain and clean it up, you realize it already possesses an industrial elegance. I just assemble these scattered pieces together to give them a second life—and what better way to measure time than with metal parts that survived the test of time?"
The process is labor-intensive. Patra meticulously sorts through garage waste, degreasing and treating rusted metal to prevent further corrosion. He then spends days planning the balance and design of each piece before welding, shaping, and integrating precise clock movements into the industrial matrix. No two timepieces are identical; each clock reflects the unique shapes and worn textures of the salvaged components used to make it.
