HANSI (HARYANA): A trip to a popular historic landmark turned near-fatal on Wednesday when a 20-year-old college student fell nearly 50 feet into a steep gorge from the upper ramparts of the historic Prithviraj Chauhan Fort in Hansi, Haryana.
The injured student has been identified as Anjali, a resident of Sorkhi village and a second-year B.Sc. student at Government College, Hisar.
The dramatic sequence of events unfolded when children flying kites atop the fort witnessed the horrific fall and heard the student's desperate cries for help. Realizing the severity of the situation, the young children rushed down to the nearby Kila Bazaar police outpost to alert authorities.
Bystander Apathy vs. Timely Rescue
While a crowd of around a hundred people quickly gathered at the spot, witnesses reported a troubling scene of public apathy.
The situation took a turn when Home Guard jawan Rajesh, posted at the Kila Bazaar police station, arrived at the scene after being alerted by the children.
"A young boy ran to us and said a girl had fallen off the fort ramparts," Home Guard Rajesh recounted.
Rajesh personally carried the severely injured student in his arms to reach emergency transport.
Condition Remains Critical
Anjali sustained severe injuries to her neck, arms, and multiple body parts due to the impact of the fall. She was initially rushed via an Emergency 112 ambulance to the Civil Hospital in Hansi, where medical staff administered first aid.
Local authorities confirmed that the victim's family members have been notified and have arrived at the hospital.
Police Investigation Underway
Police personnel inspected the site of the incident and recovered Anjali's personal belongings, including her bag and scarf, from the top of the fort.
Sub-Inspector Manish Kumar and Kila Outpost In-charge Anil Kumar stated that preliminary findings point to an accidental fall while she was visiting the monument. However, officials added that a formal case will be registered, and a thorough investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events leading up to the fall once a formal statement is recorded from the family.
