THANE — In a tragic reminder of the intense academic pressures facing young students today, a 17-year-old teenager from Maharashtra’s Thane city reportedly ended his life after failing to secure a seat in his dream higher education institution.

The deceased teenager, who resided with his family in an upscale housing complex inside Hiranandani Estate on Ghodbunder Road, had achieved an impressive score of 95.7 percent in his Class 12 science board examinations. He aspired to pursue a BS-MS dual degree program at the prestigious Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, located near Kolkata.

However, after appearing for the institute’s entrance test, the teenager secured an all-India rank of 10,474—falling just short of the cutoff required for admission. Police officials stated that the setback deeply distressed the young student over the past few days.

According to investigators from the Kasarvadavali Police Station, the incident took place on the evening of September 4. At around 7:30 PM, the boy told his family that he was going outside for a routine bicycle ride. However, around 8:15 PM, he sent a text message to his family's WhatsApp group indicating his intention to end his life.

Alarmed by the distress message, the family attempted to call him immediately, only to find his mobile phone switched off. They promptly approached the local Kasarvadavali police, who dispatched teams along with family members to search the nearby area.

Following a brief search, authorities found the teenager lying severely injured on the pavement below a nearby residential building inside the housing complex. Preliminary findings suggest that he jumped from the refuge area on the 22nd floor of the building.

He was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Thane, where attending doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Police confirmed that an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) based on the statement provided by the teenager's father. Officials added that the family does not suspect any foul play and attributes the tragic step entirely to severe academic disappointment.
