KOLKATA — In a major organizational reshuffle ahead of upcoming assembly bypolls, the West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday announced a massive 263-member state executive committee. The strategic move aims to strengthen the party's ground force and streamline grassroots operations across key districts.

The formation of the new panel comes after a long delay of over a year following the appointment of Samik Bhattacharya as the state BJP president. With high-stakes by-elections around the corner, top party brass has been given direct charge of key organizational districts to drive campaigns and consolidate local voter bases.

Among the prominent assignments, senior party leader Suvendu Adhikari has been given responsibility for the Tamluk organizational district. This crucial mandate includes the politically sensitive Nandigram constituency, which is scheduled for a bypoll on October 6. In tandem with Nandigram, the Reginagar seat in Murshidabad district will also go to the polls on the same day.

The newly formed committee brings together a blend of experienced stalwarts, state ministers, and central leaders:

  • Sisir Adhikari, former Tamluk MP and father of Suvendu Adhikari, has been entrusted with oversight of the Contai region.

  • Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar will steer operations in South Dinajpur.

  • Union Minister Shantanu Thakur has been placed in charge of Bongaon.

In addition, several state ministers have been handed targeted responsibilities across key urban and rural belts:

  • Tapas Roy will head strategy in North Kolkata.

  • Jagannath Chattopadhyay takes charge of Birbhum.

  • Nishith Pramanik will manage Cooch Behar.

  • Shankar Ghosh has been assigned oversight of Siliguri.

Party insiders indicate that by assigning specific geographical zones to heavyweight leaders, the party aims to resolve internal frictions, accelerate booth-level mobilization, and mount a high-decibel campaign for the pending assembly by-elections.
