NEW DELHI — India’s outbound trade has maintained a strong upward trajectory, with total exports surging by 15 percent during the April–August period of the current financial year, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal announced.

Addressing reporters on the sidelines of an industry event, the minister underscored that India's trade expansion remains resilient despite severe geopolitical volatility, persistent shipping disruptions, and economic slowdowns across major Western markets.

Balanced Surge Across Goods and Services

According to the Union Minister, the growth was driven by consistent double-digit expansion across both merchandise shipments and services exports. Key sectors driving outbound trade include electronics manufacturing, engineering goods, organic chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and petroleum products.

"Despite global headwinds and ongoing supply chain bottlenecks around major international shipping lanes, our exporters have demonstrated remarkable adaptability," Goyal said. He attributed the double-digit surge to expanding manufacturing capacity under domestic policy initiatives, improved logistics efficiency, and deep market penetration across non-traditional export destinations.

Navigating Global Headwinds

The robust performance comes at a time when global trade volumes have faced pressure from high inflation, tight interest rate regimes across developed economies, and ongoing conflict-driven maritime diversions.

Industry experts note that the 15 percent overall growth during the first five months of the fiscal year provides a solid baseline for meeting annual export targets. The Commerce Ministry continues to monitor trade routes closely and is working with export promotion councils to address freight costs and container shortages.

Goyal reiterated the government's long-term commitment to simplifying export documentation, boosting local value addition, and advancing bilateral trade agreements with key partner nations to sustain this momentum into the second half of the fiscal year.
